SNOW MAKES FRIDAY’S EVENING RUSH HOUR A NIGHTMARE FOR SOME FOLKS HERE IN HAMPTON ROADS… THE COLD CONTINUES THIS WEEKEND BUT A WARM UP IS ON THE WAY

For me, Friday’s commute home from work was quite treacherous. It started out okay as the snow was just beginning around 3:30 PM. The interstates were fine at that time. However, things quickly got worse, especially on the secondary roads. Snow was accumulating on the roads which made them very slippery. Many vehicles were skidding on the snowy and icy roadways. Some vehicles had difficulty stopping and you absolutely had to drive very slowly. Numerous accidents were reported. When snow falls with temperatures in the 20’s, it’s going to stick and accumulate on untreated roadways. This morning, it looks like a winter wonderland outside. The sun will be out most of the day today (Saturday). However, keep in mind that the snow reflects a lot of the sun’s radiation and it does not absorb the heat like dry ground does. This causes the temperatures to not rise to the levels that they would have had it not snowed. Temperatures will probably not rise out of the 30’s today. Some re-freezing is likely to occur tonight. Sunday will be another chilly day. On Monday, temperatures will be milder but there may be more clouds due to a warm front that will be approaching the area. There may be a period of light rain in some areas on Monday. Then, it really warms up by mid-week. I’ll have more on the extended forecast in my Sunday morning post.
